When one wonders whether a hair transplant procedure is worth it, what they are really questioning in one go is the naturalness of the results, whether it is worth taking a risk of trusting a clinic they have never seen before in a country they have never been to, and whether the financial sacrifice will yield anything tangible.
Here is the true story of Troy Samuels, a patient who voiced such concerns more boldly than anyone else before him. Troy hails from Essex and was rejected for hair transplant surgery multiple times by clinics back home. As he would tell us later, he almost decided against booking his flight there. We share the complete story — even those aspects that clinics usually do not tell — because when it comes to deciding whether something is worthwhile, there is no room for slogans.
What "worth it" depends on
Not everyone is suited for a hair transplant, and anyone telling you that is simply selling something, rather than advising. The only things that determine whether it is worth it are several very clear aspects: being a good candidate for the treatment, having realistic expectations, having a good donor site that will provide enough follicles for the recipient site — and, as important as anything else, whether those behind the procedure see the surgery as their entire work, or as just one, easy phase of the story.
The biggest disappointments in the field have nothing to do with poor quality of the procedure itself. They relate to expectations of the results that were raised higher than what was realistically achievable. Which is why, before we tell you the end result of Troy's surgery, we would like to share the reasons he was about to leave the clinic behind.
The Patient Nobody Back Home Would Guarantee
Troy went above and beyond what was expected of him. He reached out to dozens of clinics in the UK. He asked thorough, hard-hitting questions. He even sat across from two of the clinics. He wasn't comparing prices; he was looking for a clinic that would step up and guarantee his results.
The issue was Troy's hair texture. Having afro-textured hair meant he kept getting refused a guarantee of success. It wasn't about them trying to mislead him—most of them just acknowledged that their machines and expertise weren't designed for his hair type. For Troy, however, it amounted to the same thing: I can't be sure we'll give you good results. Just imagine the feeling of having done all your research, and being politely shut down anyway because of your hair.
Why afro-textured hair makes most clinics run scared
Here's what happened, because this is the technical reason behind everything else.
Afro-textured hair doesn't just curl on top of the head; it curls underneath. The hair itself sits within a curly follicle that coils up into the skin. A normal needle-like punching tool, which is used by so many clinics, pierces the skin straight ahead, and cuts across this curl. It literally snips and slices through an enormous amount of curly grafts even before extraction. This is the reason why afro-textured hair sends many clinics scurrying back. First of all, we explained how we deal with the problem. We always carry out extraction under direct control by a surgeon; no automatic or robotic systems can be used for this procedure, and the punch tip that we utilize is blunt, made of a hard plastic instead of the sharp metal one. This particular tip is made to go around the follicle following the natural curvature of the latter instead of cutting it straightly: it follows the shape of the grafts and gently separates them from the surrounding tissue along their own angles, thereby taking it out from the skin surface regardless of the angle of the follicle or the tightness of its coil. And that's how we perform extraction of afro grafts without damaging or even killing them, and this is why our surgeries always yield about 98% of the healthy grafts.
The other half of the story most UK clinics do not tell you
There was one common thread to all the information Troy had received back home, and it comes up again and again. Not only had every UK clinic quoted Troy the cost and procedure of the transplant surgery; they had told him very little about anything else. How about after? The very first wash once you are invited back in. The medication regime. The post-operation phase of recovery where results are actually gained or lost. There was a tendency with some of them to clearly indicate that their job ends once the surgery is done.
The transplant surgery itself is not the destination point but rather a halfway mark of the journey. Aftercare, your first wash, your medication program, and continued communication from your coordinator far after you have returned home are part of the procedure, not an upsell. Even an extraction and perfect placement of a tissue graft can fall victim to recovery that is not properly managed. When you consider whether or not the transplant is worth it, the question becomes crucial – what happens after?
The cost consideration – half as many grafts, four times more expensive
And then came the cost, and here the figures spoke for themselves. Our analysis showed that, on average, the UK clinics would offer Troy half as many grafts as we thought he would need, at about four times the cost. This was no typographical error; fewer grafts at an inflated price.
In previous articles, we explained why Turkey provides a cheaper solution with no compromise in results. It seems only logical to stress again that high cost does not necessarily mean a better outcome, while a reduced number of grafts priced highly is not something to be content with silently.
How he came without having to pay even one penny in advance
With all the right techniques, complete aftercare, and reliable numbers, Troy said what almost everyone in his situation says: that it was difficult for him to leave his home country, that he had never been to Turkey, and that he still did not know how to trust us. That was no problem that could be reasoned around; it was simply a totally understandable fear.
So we offered him the same deal we give to all of our patients: zero money down or even any up front. They would fly in and stay in their hotel for the first night. If they wished to, they would come to our clinic and see for themselves, meet the staff and doctors, and form their own opinion. And if what they saw did not reassure them, we would cover their first night's expenses and cancel the procedure altogether – at absolutely no charge or pressure to them. What this will do for you and what it won't is clear. The first thing is that there's zero financial risk at all, which is where the real fear comes from, because none of the patients that have been through this in any of our years have ever gotten here and backed out because of it. It doesn't take away all of the nerves. We've had many patients get so anxious or so panicked to the point that they don't continue and go through it. But without the risk of the money, the choice is made based on what the situation is when they arrive.
So, was it really worth it?
Troy arrived at the clinic looking visibly unsettled. But once Troy had visited our center, met the team, seen the facility, and in Troy's own words – he was fully relaxed. He had his treatment done on the very next morning. And since he felt quite comfortable by this point in time, he even agreed to have his teeth whitening and dental cleaning at our dental clinic just a day after his transplantation procedure, which Troy never mentioned on any of our previous phone calls.
One thing the man had told during an interview stands out for its vivid expression. "It seems like I'm living in Dubai – all is five-star here," Troy said. His 'before' and 'after' is featured in our website gallery. However, the sentence that we will remember forever doesn't speak about how many grafts the man received. It speaks about the person whose experience turned into five star. Was it all worthwhile for Troy? Troy answered this question without equivocation. What made this worthwhile for him? It had to do with the correct technique for his hair, the correct number of grafts, having gone through the whole process instead of just the procedure, and eliminating the danger which kept him from going out at all.
A truly honest disclaimer
There are people out there who will find a transplant truly worthwhile, but it is not something that everybody will find worthwhile. This is something that we will tell you up front. Hair transplanted using our methods will always be permanent, but the native hair will continue to thin with age. Therefore, proper aftercare and honest discussion about realistic outcomes is important since anybody promising to save your hairline from ever receding is not telling the truth. If you are someone who is experiencing their hair loss too early, or someone whose expectations surpass what can actually be accomplished through surgical methods, you might find that the right answer for this year is patience and medication.
Don't know if it's going to be worth it for you?
Send us your photos and your personal history. The medical staff will give you their honest evaluation as to whether you're a candidate, how many grafts you can expect realistically, and what the best option is for you moving forward – transplant, supportive treatment, or even just monitoring.
